I love working with people, listening to them talk about their lifeworlds, and then helping them to tell their stories in powerful and sometimes unexpected ways. I’ve been known to work with people to create board games, comics, haikus, pop-up exhibitions and zines.

I always strive for my practice to be creative, inclusive and participative.

I’ve spent the last 20 years working as an education researcher and university teacher. I am also a non-religious funeral celebrant, having trained with Humanists UK in 2018.

In DEAD GOOD, I carry out most of the initial consultation work, which I do online or by phone. I also lead on our death education, funerals & memorials, legacy projects, and GET MORTAL parties. Lindsey is heavily involved in all of this work too, but you’ll usually talk with me at the beginning of the process. We both run Dead Good’s social media accounts. Most of our work can be done virtually, except the funerals and memorial events. We are currently only available for funerals and memorial events in the North East of England.

I made the big move to Sunderland with my family in 2022, and now make the most of the North East coastline, scavenging sea glass and interesting pieces of drift wood whenever I can.

Outside of DEAD GOOD, you will find me acting out stories with my youngest son, and sharing cat memes or archaeology trivia with my oldest one.

When thinking about my own earthly farewell, I’m keen for it to be as eco-friendly, DIY and personal as possible. I’m after a natural or woodland burial. I’d like to be buried without a coffin, in a simple shroud (like a cotton flat sheet or woollen blanket), and covered in seasonal greenery picked and offered by family and friends. I’d like to be buried as the Sun either sets or rises, followed by a graveside picnic and singsong. I expect my friends to bring out all the tuneful harmonies in my memory.

My pronouns are she/her.

DEAD GOOD is the convergence of two sisters: a physical manifestation of our lived experience, our skills and our true calling. My role within DEAD GOOD is to lead on our brand identity, website and merchandise. I am also available for consultations and advice-giving appointments online, by phone and in person (local to me).

My end of life planning is a work in progress but I know I would like to be buried (if I can’t be composted - it’s not legal in the UK yet!). I want a cardboard coffin to be painted with mushrooms and fungi. I want to be in a woodland forever. I want people to have a party afterwards and do the conga.

I currently live in Stoke on Trent with my partner, James, my two children and our many (many) pets.

Before launching my personal art practice in 2010, I worked for a number of arts organisations in the north of England, including Arts Council England and Ministry of Craft.

Since 2013, I have been a full-time freelance creative person working on big commercial campaigns for the likes of the BBC. More recently, I have been caring for (and at times home educating) my two children whilst working on artistic projects and selling vintage clothing.

I am a late-diagnosed autistic and neuroqueer person. In addition to art, my obsessions are horror films; folklore; flora and fauna; fungi and foraging.

Our Backstory

DEAD GOOD was founded in 2018 by sisters Katy Vigurs and Lindsey Vigurs, and was inspired by Grayson Perry’s Rites of Passage TV show, which had an episode entitled ‘Death’. Grayson helped two families to tailor personal rituals to mark the deaths of loved ones. These included a living funeral with a memory jar for a terminally ill man, and a walking ceremony and DIY home shrine for a family whose young son had been killed. We were struck by the power of such bespoke, participative events to support families to grieve, remember and commemorate their loved ones. This work resonated deeply with us and continues to inspire DEAD GOOD’s mission.

At DEAD GOOD we strive for our work to be environmentally conscious, inventive, participative, design-led and always deeply personalised.

We are passionate about death education. For us, death is not taboo. Our practice is open and compassionate about all things death and dying.

We work with the living, the dying and the dead; with individuals, families, groups and organisations.

We will support you to participate creatively, emotionally and physically in tailoring your own meaningful farewells, rituals and legacy projects.

OUR DAD

Our wonderfully warm and quirky Dad,
Peter Francis Vigurs, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in January 2021 and died 12 months later.
Dad wanted to talk about life and death a lot in his last year. He chose the music to be played at his funeral and a poem he wanted to be read at the burial. It gave us a real lived appreciation of the importance of advance funeral planning and the value of personal legacy work…
